What to Wear to Your Newborn Photoshoot at Mabel & Møøse

Getting dressed for a newborn photoshoot does not need to be complicated. In fact, the simpler the better. This guide covers everything you need to know so you can arrive feeling comfortable, relaxed and completely yourself.

What Should Mum Wear to a Newborn Photoshoot

The most important thing is that you feel good. You have just had a baby, and this session is about capturing that quiet, extraordinary time, not about looking like anyone other than you.

At Mabel & Møøse, I have a small, carefully chosen collection of dresses and knits available for you to borrow on the day. They come in all sizes and have been hand picked specifically for studio newborn photography, soft, flattering fabrics in simple tones that complement your baby without overpowering them. You are very welcome to choose one of these when you arrive.

If you prefer to bring your own outfit, a simple plain white t-shirt or blouse works beautifully, long or short sleeved. Avoid anything with puffed or oversized sleeves as these can obscure your baby when you are cradling them. White or nude underwear is essential so nothing shows through lighter fabrics.

The studio is kept very warm for your baby's comfort, so lightweight fabrics are always a good idea.

What Should Dad Wear to a Newborn Photoshoot

A plain white t-shirt or relaxed shirt is ideal. Nothing too formal. The session should feel like a quiet morning at home, not a job interview.

For trousers, beige or light neutral tones work best as the waistband may be visible in some shots. The same applies to mum if she is wearing a top rather than a dress.

Both parents will need to bring socks. The studio floor is kept spotless for obvious reasons, and bare feet are not permitted for hygiene, though they will not appear in your photographs.

What Should Siblings Wear to a Newborn Photoshoot

Little ones should be dressed in something cool, comfortable and white. A simple white t-shirt and shorts, or a white dress, is perfect. Because siblings are often more fully in the frame, choose something that feels like them. You want them to look like themselves, not like they have been dressed for someone else's photoshoot.

I have a small collection of white outfits for boys and girls available to borrow on the day, in sizes up to 4-5 years, so if you would rather not worry about sourcing something, I have you covered. If your little one is out of nappies, plain white underwear underneath is all they will need. No shoes or socks needed as little bare feet are one of my favourite things to photograph.

What Should Baby Wear to a Newborn Photoshoot

All your baby needs is a plain white bodysuit to arrive in. Bring them dressed and ready to go so we can begin without disturbing them.

Once we are underway, I have a wide collection of Scandi-style white outfits and neutral knits in the studio for your baby to wear during the session. Choosing from these is part of the experience, and everything has been selected to complement the calm, minimal style of a Mabel & Møøse gallery. Tiny bare feet will make an appearance too, and they never disappoint.

If you have any questions at all before your session, please do not hesitate to get in touch. I want you to arrive feeling calm and looked after, and that starts long before you walk through the door.
