Why Mums Should Be in Their Baby’s First Photos

When you are booking your newborn baby’s first photoshoot, you might be thinking that you don’t want to be in the photographs. I hear this all the time. “Just our baby in the pictures, please.” And I get it. I really do. I’ve had four children and I can remember exactly how I felt in those post-partum weeks. Standing in front of a camera wasn’t anywhere on my radar. But now, it makes me feel really sad that I have so few photographs of me with any of my tiny babies. So please put your trust in me, because I understand how you’ll be feeling and I know how to help you look and feel beautiful in those photographs.

And when you look back in years to come, you won’t see tired eyes or a messy bun… you’ll see the way your baby nestled into you, the way you held them, and how loved they were from the very beginning.

I’ll help you feel relaxed in simple, natural positions that are comfortable rather than ‘posed’. And you’ll love my soft, flattering light that falls in all the right places and keeps the focus on the connection between you and your baby. Most of the time you won’t even feel like you’re being photographed, you’ll just be holding your little one, while I take care of everything else.

Gentle moment between mum and baby captured in natural light

If you look through my galleries, you’ll see so many new mummies who once felt exactly as you do now. Some were happy to be photographed, but more than a few arrived firmly in the “just baby pictures” camp.

Because I know from personal experience how important these photographs will become, I always try to help new mums feel comfortable enough to step into even one image. And if they decide later that it’s not for them, they don’t have to include it in their print collection. But if the photograph is never taken, that tiny, tender moment with their little one is gone forever.

I work in a way that’s gentle and thoughtful, always keeping in mind that you’ve just had a baby. You and your little one are the top priority, and your comfort always comes first.

There are a few simple things you can do before your baby arrives to make the session easier. Treat yourself to a manicure with a neutral polish, and choose nude underwear so it doesn’t show through your outfit. I have an ever-growing studio wardrobe full of white and neutral clothes that work beautifully for photography, in all sizes. Of course, you’re welcome to bring your own white outfits too.
