Photographing a 3 Month Old Baby in Dundee
Three months is such a lovely age to photograph. Your baby is no longer quite a newborn, but they are still wonderfully tiny. Eyes are brighter, little smiles are beginning to appear, and their personality is gently starting to shine through.
Whether you missed newborn photographs or simply want to capture this next stage, a 3 month old baby is a joy to photograph in my calm Dundee studio.
What is a 3 month old baby like?
At around three months, your baby is becoming wonderfully aware of the world around them. They make beautiful eye contact, follow you with their eyes and often reward you with those first proper smiles.
They are starting to feel a little stronger when supported in your hands, and love being held upright where they can look around and take everything in. Their expressions change from curious and thoughtful to suddenly bright and full of delight.
Some babies may drift off for a short sleep, while others are wide awake for most of the session. Both are perfect for photographs at this stage.
What photographs can we take at this stage?
At three months, the photographs naturally look a little different from newborn portraits, and that is part of their charm.
We can create beautiful images of your baby lying comfortably on their back, wide awake and taking everything in. Those bright eyes and little expressions are often the highlight of a session at this age.
Supported upright in your hands, your baby can look around and show off that growing strength. These portraits feel full of personality and connection. I will also gently photograph you holding your baby close, because those images of you together are the ones that will mean the most in years to come.
If your little one drifts off for a short sleep, we take advantage of that too. Even at three months, a peaceful sleeping portrait wrapped in soft white can still feel wonderfully timeless.
Is 3 months too late for newborn photos?
Not at all.
While the first two weeks after birth are known for those very curled, sleepy newborn portraits, three months is still a beautifully tiny stage. Your baby may be more awake and expressive now, but that simply means the photographs tell a slightly different story.
At this age, you begin to see personality. There is eye contact, little smiles and a sense that they are starting to recognise you and their surroundings. The images feel less womb-like and more interactive, and many parents love that.
If newborn photographs were not possible in those early days, a three month old baby session is still a wonderful way to capture your little one while they are very much still a baby.
Why this stage is worth capturing
Three months passes in a heartbeat. One moment your baby is curled up in your arms, the next they are stretching, smiling and beginning to discover their voice.
At this stage, they still fit perfectly against your chest. Their hands still curl around your finger. Their cheeks are full and soft, and their expressions change in an instant.
It is a beautiful in-between time. Not quite a newborn, not yet sitting up and on the move.
Just wonderfully, unmistakably your baby.
One day, when your baby is no longer quite so small, you will look back at these photographs and remember exactly how this stage felt. That is why three months is always worth capturing.
