Oh, How Do You Tell Them Apart? Photographing Newborn Twins
Everyone stops your double buggy and says "ah, twins, how lovely."
You probably don't get more than 50 metres before you hear "double trouble," "you've got your hands full," and other little gems like "are they twins?" Or "I had 15 months between mine and it was just like having twins."
I don't think anything really prepares you for having a newborn but having two is next level and nothing like having a small gap between two babies. Feeding two newborns, working out what each baby needs, up in the night for two babies — the list is endless. I have so much admiration for anyone who has twins.
I actually love to photograph twins. Seeing two tiny little humans lying side by side on my beanbag just melts my heart. They often instinctively reach for each other to touch or snuggle in. And often a twin will mistake their sibling's cheek for mum's breast or their bottle and try to feed from it.
I have no expectations about a twin photoshoot. As with any newborn session, baby is my little boss for the morning and with twins it just means that I have two babies whose needs have to be met.
If you are a twin mum or dad you are probably feeling a little nervous. What if one baby is unsettled while the other is asleep? What if both cry at the same time? What if the whole session descends into chaos? You might even put off having a newborn photoshoot because of all the things that might not go to plan. Please don't worry. I have photographed hundreds of babies and many sets of twins, some twins with older siblings and a set of triplets, so I am very experienced and I know how to get the best from every session. I have never had a twin session where I didn't get enough photographs to create a beautiful gallery of images.
It might seem strange for me to say this but if I can take one stunning photograph of your twin babies and have both you and your partner feeling relaxed during your photoshoot then I consider that a win. I have actually never delivered just one image but removing all the pressure from you and your babies makes everything relaxed.
My studio is a very calm space. You don't need to struggle with a twin buggy or worry about car parking or stairs. You can park right outside and bring your babies into the studio in their car seats. It couldn't be easier and I have everything that you need, including a big comfortable sofa for you to relax into whether you are feeding your babies or watching them being photographed on my beanbag.
I will always try to get a selection of family photos and each parent with the babies, and it's lovely to create a portrait of each baby on their own too, because although they are twins they are little people in their own right. But my first priority is always your comfort and happiness and one stunning portrait of your twin babies.
As you can see if you look around my website, my style is very natural with almost no props, so all your babies will have to do is snuggle on a blanket. No flower pots, no buckets, no giant teddies. Just your adorable babies nestling in to each other. The photograph I create will show the start of their lives together and I can't even begin to imagine how precious that will be to them as they grow into children and adults.
I frequently photograph twins before their due date as twins are very often born a little early and rarely go past their due date. I would suggest that you book their session for a week after they are expected to arrive and if that needs to be brought forward or pushed back then that is always possible.
I would absolutely love to photograph your twins as newborns and welcome you and your partner to my studio. If you love my Scandinavian style and have had a chance to look through the twin photos on this blog then please do book your babies' photoshoot — that's one less thing to think about during your pregnancy.
You can find full details of my newborn photography here. There is no extra charge for twins so book in with a newborn session and message me so as I know that you are a twin mum.
