Blair's Newborn Photoshoot in Dundee
Fourteen day old Blair arrived at the studio with a mass of thick dark hair and the most gorgeous chubby cheeks. I had the pleasure of photographing her brother Reuben when he was just five days old, so being invited back into this family's newborn bubble for the second time felt like a real privilege. Two babies in under two years is incredibly hard work and incredibly wonderful in equal measure.
Reuben adored his new baby sister but was not particularly keen to be photographed with her, which is completely understandable. A new baby is a huge change for a toddler and I always think it is far better to capture a couple of natural moments with a sibling than to try to coax them into something they are not ready for. Reuben was perfectly happy watching from a distance and we did manage a beautiful family photograph together. What I loved most was the way he kept reaching for his dad, touching his ear, his hair, his face. He is only twenty months old and still very much a baby himself. That need for reassurance is something so tender to witness and I am so glad we captured it.
Blair was a sleepy little thing for most of the session but when she did open her eyes she knew exactly what she was doing.
When you have two babies close together you disappear into a bubble of feeding, washing, cuddles and nappy changes. Your second fourth trimester is intense in a different way to your first. You are more confident as a mother but every baby is different and there is still so much to learn. New ways of settling, new routines to find, and the small logistical miracle of leaving the house with a toddler and a newborn. But instinct takes over and you find your way, just as you did the first time.
If you are ever worried about your baby not settling at their session, please do not be. I genuinely love it when a wide awake character comes into the studio and I am very good at finding ways to help a baby relax.
If you would love calm, timeless photographs of your new baby I would love to hear from you.
