Welcoming Baby Hazel…..
…..A Calm, Minimalist Newborn Photoshoot
Adorable baby Hazel was just 14 days old when she had her newborn photoshoot at the Mabel & Møøse studio. Two weeks old is a wonderful time to have your new baby photographed. They will still have that amazing newborn look but they will be starting to have some awake windows that are so good to be able to capture in photographs.
She slept through part of her session, just completely chilled. I got some gorgeous little portraits of her, all relaxed and settled. I always think the best way to see a baby’s real little personality is just to let them get comfy in their own way — no pressure, no posing. Just letting them be. Hazel has the sweetest little profile.
“You can’t see her face…”
Well, that’s sort of the point.
There are plenty of lovely photos of her gorgeous little face — don’t worry, Mum and Dad won’t forget what she looked like as a baby. But when she turns 21, will they remember the curve of her tiny spine? Or the way her soft little hairline sat above those perfect folds on the back of her neck?
That’s what this photo is about. It’s about remembering all the details, not just the obvious ones.
And don’t get me started on her teensy wee toes. So perfect and new — like they’ve only just arrived in the world. Now her parents will never forget how tiny and amazing they looked in those early days. That’s the magic of photographing the little details… they don’t stay little for long.
She looked so settled and content being held by her Mummy and Daddy — like she knew she was exactly where she was meant to be. When Hazel is older, this photo will mean the world to her. A reminder of just how tiny she once was, and how completely adored she’s always been.
Baby Hazel was more than happy for me to pop one of the chunky jumpers from my studio wardrobe on her. I think she was a fan—already a little baby fashionista.
I’m often asked where to shop for newborn outfits for a baby’s photoshoot—but honestly, there’s no need. I’ve got everything that you need.
The last thing you need to be doing in those early days is trawling the shops for the ‘perfect’ outfit. At the studio, I’ve got a carefully chosen selection of lovely, simple pieces in soft whites and neutrals, so there will always be something that feels just right.
But it’s also worth saying—if your baby doesn’t settle too well, there’s absolutely no point in disturbing them for outfit changes. Some of my favourite sessions have been photographed entirely in a plain white vest. Simple, timeless and all about your baby.
In years to come, Hazel will be able to hear the story behind this photograph—that at just 14 days old, she was already engaging with her Daddy. You can see her looking right at him, completely mesmerised. Such a sweet little moment, and one they’ll never forget.
They say babies don’t smile at 14 days old, but I’m not so sure. Hazel was so bright and alert during her session—and that wee expression? I’d say that was a smile. Whether it was wind or wonder, it was absolutely lovely to capture. She was definitely taking everything in and already so engaging.
After a cosy feed, she was ready for a wee nap. I don’t believe in posing babies into positions that don’t feel natural to them — this is just how she settled, all comfy and content. I think she looks completely adorable, squishing her tiny hands up by her ears and giving herself a little self-soothing cuddle.
It’s so lovely to photograph a newborn during their active sleep phase — all those little squiggles and squirms, and the funny wee faces they pull. I just let them move how they want and capture it all. But if your baby needs a cuddle or isn’t quite settling, then it’s straight back into your arms. No rush, no pressure — just keeping things calm and cosy for your little one.
Sometimes all that’s needed is the gentlest touch from Mum or Dad. Baby Hazel curled her tiny fingers around theirs, let out the biggest yawn… and then absolutely refused to let go. We had to gently ease their hands free — she was quite determined to hang on.
This is just a little glimpse of the kind of images you can expect from a newborn photoshoot with me.
I’d love to create something really special for your baby — simple, natural photographs that gently capture these early days. It’s all led by your little one, and I work at their pace. Hazel was the perfect little boss for the morning and I made sure that everything was done to keep her happy safe and confortable.
